Modern heat pumps are low-maintenance — but not no-maintenance. Here's the servicing rhythm that keeps efficiency high, warranties valid and running costs low across an Irish winter.
Air-source heat pumps have quietly become the default choice for new and upgraded Irish homes. They're efficient, quiet and — compared to a gas boiler — refreshingly hands-off. But 'low-maintenance' gets misread as 'no-maintenance', and that's where avoidable problems creep in.
The short answer: once a year
For the vast majority of domestic air-source systems, an annual service is the sweet spot. It keeps performance high through the heating season, catches wear before it becomes failure, and — crucially — keeps most manufacturer warranties valid. Skipping services is one of the most common reasons a warranty claim gets rejected.
What a proper heat pump service actually covers
- Refrigerant charge and pressure checks — the single biggest driver of efficiency
- Airflow and coil inspection, clearing debris from the outdoor unit
- Electrical connections, controls and sensor calibration
- Water flow, pump operation and system pressure on the heating side
- A performance read-out so you can see how the system is actually running
Signs you shouldn't wait for the annual visit
Rising electricity bills with no change in usage, ice building up on the outdoor unit outside of a defrost cycle, longer warm-up times, or new rattles and hums are all worth a call. Small faults left running all winter cost far more in wasted electricity than an early visit ever would.
The HeatHub approach
We service heat pumps as heat pumps — not as an afterthought to boiler work. Our engineers are trained specifically on air-source and ground-source systems, and every visit ends with a plain-English report on exactly what we checked and what we found.
